Paintings, collages, and melancholic walls.

I've finished three more small collages, and have six others in progress.  For the ones in progress, I decided I wanted to include something different.  After coming across Karen's beautiful Etsy shop: Arte Bella Surplus, I went bead-mad and ordered a colourful assortment of glass beads, which I'm eagerly awaiting.  As soon as I've completed them, I'll post photos.

(dried leaf; stone; antique letter fragments; stamp; hand painted papers;
Japanese and Italian papers; 15 x 15 cm.)

In the studio, I've been working on larger scale paintings for a show I have in a Ministry building here in Munich in March.  It's a very big building with very big walls.  So, I need to complete a big series of big paintings.

One thing I've learned about myself: when I'm supposed to be working on one type of thing, suddenly other types of things become so much more appealing.

(oil and cold wax on wood 30 x 30 cm.)

(oil and cold wax on wood 20 x 20 cm.)

This is a small series, of small paintings (30 x 30 / 20 x 20 / 15 x 15 cm.)  It's done: I painted the edges black this morning.  With luck, I'll be able to find a small venue for these.

On my cycle home from the studio today, I took photos of some of the melancholic walls of autumn I encountered.

Forgive me for wrapping this up with another Molly shot.  Asleep in my lap.
I am not going to need a hot water bottle this Winter.

  1. Molly is beautiful. She's looking very comfortable in her new home.
I find Autumn so bewitching. I love the photographs of the walls. The pink creepers alongside Burgundy paint is a nice clash.
The wax and cold wax squares are very pleasing, I love squares like that.

    1. Thanks, Jane. Bewitching is the word. It's certainly my favourite season.
I'm looking forward to playing with the placement of the squares on the wall when I eventually hang them somewhere.

  2. Great works! I see you use Etsy, but how about zazzle.com, cafepress. com, fiverr? They could be a good way to show your works too and to help "remove" stupidity in the streets like headlines on t-shirts, fridge-magnets, cups, etc: My Boyfriend kisses Better Than Yours, FBI - female body inspector, etc. Not everything we see and think of should be about sex, right? It would be much better if there were more nice pictures of mythical creatures, good thoughts, poems from fantasy genre, etc? I'm allanbard there, I use some of my illustrations, thoughts, poems from my books (like: One can fight money only with money, Even in the hottest fire there's a bit of water, All the problems in the world lead to one - narrow-minded people, or
Love and happiness will be around,
as all the chains will disappear,
and Mountaineers will climb their mount
and there won't be any tear! etc). Best wishes! Keep up the good work! Let the wonderful noise of the sea always sounds in your ears! (a greeting of the water dragons' hunters - my Tale Of The Rock Pieces).

  3. Love both photographs of Molly, she is adorable. I think you will have fun with her, she will be after your knitting wool! Today I walked past a wall with bright pink, red and cream leaves and it stopped me in my tracks with the colours against the grey stone wall. You are busy, the technique looks interesting with wax, not really sure what you are doing but like the results, Lovely collage too.

    1. She has already been after my wool, Milly! I have to keep it up high. It's like having very small children again, and keeping things out of paw's reach.
Cold wax is an amazing medium. It's like encaustic which uses hot wax, but it's - well - cold. It has a consistency like paste and gives structure and translucence to oil paints, and allows you to really work with the surface: scratching, and scraping and so on. I love it.

  4. I like your paintings ... a lot. The worked-over white with a hint of otherness has just the right texture. You must be pleased ... but I can see that there will be some bead work in your future. The card you sent me had a bead attached to it and that brought more to the overall feel of it.

And this is the first of my sightings of Molly! She is adorable, so please keep posting photos of her ... love love love her!

    1. Thanks, Jan. I am actually happy with how these have been turning out. I have two bigger ones on the go now, which will be interesting. The size and format are so important - some things I want to express and experiment with only work really small, and other only really large. It's all a bit of a mystery...

Yes - the bead on the card - that was the finishing touch. You're absolutely right. Something about there being a 3D element perhaps, or a focal point.

As for photos of Molly - if you insist! She's at her most photogenic stage now!

    1. Thank you, Seth. I've been working with cold wax for about five years now, and love it. I had always wanted to try encaustic, but never had the proper set up for it (ventilation and so on), but with cold wax, that's not so much an issue.

I've been hugely inspired by Rebecca Crowell - whom I believe you know, and - if I'm not mistaken - you are even the lucky owner of one of her pieces!

  8. Lynn, your paintings look very interesting,I like the cool colours, and I presume because of the wax there is also texture. I'd love to see them in real life.
Cats certainly know how to relax!

  9. Hi Ruby, yes the wax gives a gorgeous texture and translucence which unfortunately can't really be captured with a camera. Even in person, the usually require good lighting - I guess like most paintings - to really set them off.

Cat's are the epitome of relaxation when they're in relax mode!

  10. I had to smile at your kitty picture because my cat sleeps on my lap when I am typing at the computer too... btw, your collages are wonderful.

    1. It's better when they sleep than when they decide to pounce on the keyboard. The story I've been working on lately has suffered some very interesting feline editing lately.

Thanks for your kind words about my collages, Donna.
